Formation Workshops

Join us for these bi-weekly Zoom-based workshops where we will explore various spiritual disciplines and practices and learn practical ways to weave them into our daily our lives.

We hosted our third Formation Workshop last night;

We hosted our third Formation Workshop last night; this time around we were led by Jeff Hesselink in a discussion around the spiritual practice of fasting. Jeff posed a great question as we began our time together: "Do you really miss him?" Jeff reminded us of the passages in the Gospels in which Jesus explains how his presence on earth re-oriented practices like fasting: you and I now know the person of Jesus but are still awaiting his return. ⠀

Growing up, my dad worked for a couple of different missions organizations in the US. For a season this meant a lot of travel for him. If the trip was going to last beyond a couple of days, my mother always worked hard to help us weather his absence and be aware of when he would be back. One example: before he left on a long trip we would make a paper chain with a link for each day he was gone, and then one of us would get to rip off a link each day until he was back. I can assure you, when that chain got down to a link or two all of us kids were full of anticipation. ⠀

Do we think of Jesus' return like this? Or do we over-spiritualize the whole thing and put it in a back corner of our minds, only to be thought about at Easter or during communion? Are you living your daily life in light of the fact that Jesus is a real person, he loves you deeply, and he is returning soon? Sure, we might not be able to make a paper chain, but I think if these things are true we'll be a people who live in tangible anticipation.

It's been a few weeks now since I've sent one of these, so I'm glad to be back at it! Some of you will know that I moved a lot when I was growing up, and lately I've found myself thinking of the coming months (and hopefully coming out of this pandemic) the way that I often felt right before a move: how did I want my life to look different post-move? What did I want to stay the same? Did I want to shift my priorities at all? If you've been thinking that way at all, I want to put something out there for you to consider.⠀

Matt and I have been reading a fantastic book by Jim Wilder called Renovated. The book is all about how a deep attachment to God is really what helps us grow as disciples and see our character transform. One thing that Wilder emphasizes is that a result of healthy attachment to God will be the sense that 'God's people' are 'my people' - the tribe or community to which we belong and for which we are willing to sacrifice. Wilder writes, "The Greek word koinónia (ex. Acts 2:42) speaks of shared relational resources we could call partnership. Having the mind of Christ in an active sense - for life in real time, seeing reality, bringing healing, and finding guidance - requires koinónia. Practicing our new self in Christ requires feedback from others who can see what God sees and have mercy for our learning process."⠀

So my encouragement to you as you evaluate what your priorities will be moving forward is that you not undervalue the importance of real presence with other believers. It deepens our love for God and creates the space for us to grow to look more like Jesus. ⠀
